Book club membership card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet

A book club runs on goodwill, until the bookshop asks who exactly gets the members’ discount and the author talk draws more people than there are chairs. A book club membership card on each reader’s phone answers the first question, and a ticket per meet-up helps you keep the second one under control.

A reader’s card, kept next to the train ticket

Your club’s name and colours sit at the top, followed by the reader’s name, a number and the plan, for example a single Member plan at €15 a year. The card states until when it is valid. If you extend it for another year of reading, the date changes on the phone by itself. When proof is needed, at the bookshop till or at the library door, the reader opens the Wallet and you, or the bookseller, look at the card or scan its QR code with a phone.

Example plans and amounts from the “Membership card” template: you change the names, the amounts and the validity period. MPass does not collect these amounts. On the back of the card you write your own text, for example: Book club · Writing · Shared library.

Three real situations

At the till of the partner bookshop

If a bookshop gives your readers a discount, the bookseller needs to see something. The card shows the club, the reader’s name and a date that has not passed. The discount itself is an agreement between you and the shop.

The monthly meet-up with limited chairs

When the back room holds twenty people, share a ticket link for that evening and stop when you reach twenty. Those with a ticket are sure of a seat, and you scan them in at the door.

An author talk at the library

For a talk open to the public, members show their card and other visitors show a ticket. You see who is from the club without a paper register, and the library sees an organised entrance.

How it works: 3 steps

Open the “Book club” template

It is already set up for this activity: “Membership card” as the title, example plans, colours. Add your logo and your own text in ten minutes.

Add your members

One by one, through a sign-up link each person fills in, or by Excel import on the Pro plan. Everyone receives their card by email or by link.

Scan with your phone

The card goes into Apple Wallet or Google Wallet in one tap. To check it, you scan its QR code with your own phone, with no hardware to buy.

Create my reader card

Example: a book club of 24 readers

Take a club of 24 readers who meet once a month in a bookshop and run a small writing group on the side. The organiser adds everyone in one sitting, by name and email address, and each reader receives the card by email. Membership is €15, paid in cash at the first meeting of the year, after which she activates the cards. With 24 cards and a talk now and then for about twenty people, everything stays within the Free plan of 50 active cards or tickets.

Tickets for your events too

The same app creates tickets for your events, for example “Monthly meet-up” or “Author talk”. You share a link, each guest gets a ticket with a QR code in their Wallet, and you scan at the door. MPass does not collect the ticket price: you take it as you always have. See event ticketing.

What it costs

Free up to 50 active cards or tickets, with no time limit. The Essential plan (€19 a month excluding VAT, up to 300 cards) adds renewal reminders and certificates. The Pro plan (€49 a month excluding VAT) adds Excel import. No commitment, and a 14-day trial of the paid plans with no credit card.

Frequently asked questions

Does the card track which books a reader has borrowed?

No. MPass is not a library catalogue or a lending system. If your club shares a shelf of books, keep your loan notebook for that. The card only says who is a member, on which plan and until when.

Is it worth it for a club with no membership fee?

It can be. A plan can cost €0, and the card then serves as a simple sign of belonging and as proof for the bookshop discount. With fewer than 50 readers, the Free plan has no time limit, so it costs the club nothing.

Can readers sign up by themselves?

Yes. Share the membership link in your newsletter or your group chat. The reader fills in their own details, which saves you typing names and email addresses, and you decide when to activate the card.

Does MPass collect membership fees?

No. You enter the amounts for information only. Your members pay the club as usual (bank transfer, in person) and you activate their card in MPass. No payment goes through the app.

Do we need to install an app?

No. You manage everything from your browser, and your members install nothing: the card goes straight into Apple Wallet (iPhone) or Google Wallet (Android), which are already on their phone.
