Chess club membership card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet

Ten minutes before round one of a rapid tournament, the arbiter needs to know who is actually in the room, and the club treasurer would like to know who among them has paid this year’s fee. A chess club membership card in the Wallet answers the second question, and tournament entries issued as tickets answer the first.

What the chess club card shows

The card shows the club’s name, the player’s name and member number, the plan and the season. Member and Youth are example plans, the youth fee often being much lower. Players receive the card by email or by link; parents hold the cards of the youngest. A junior who turns adult is moved to the Member plan and the card updates. At the club room or the tournament desk, a committee member scans the QR code with a phone. The card shows no rating: MPass has no link with federations or rating lists.

Member€40
Youth€15

Example plans and amounts from the “Membership card” template: you change the names, the amounts and the validity period. MPass does not collect these amounts. On the back of the card you write your own text, for example: Tournaments · Simuls · FIDE-rated ELO.

Three real situations

Check-in at a rapid tournament

Entrants registered through a ticket link during the week. At the desk, each ticket is scanned as the player arrives, so the arbiter pairs round one with the people present and not with a list of good intentions.

A simultaneous display

A master takes on twenty-five boards, not twenty-six. The simul is published with twenty-five tickets; club members get the link first, and each board is taken by someone holding a ticket.

Wednesday afternoon for juniors

Parents drop off children for the youth session. The trainer checks the cards on the parents’ phones in September, then knows the group; newcomers are given the membership link to fill in at home.

How it works: 3 steps

Open the “Chess” template

It is already set up for this activity: “Membership card” as the title, example plans, colours. Add your logo and your own text in ten minutes.

Add your members

One by one, through a sign-up link each person fills in, or by Excel import on the Pro plan. Everyone receives their card by email or by link.

Scan with your phone

The card goes into Apple Wallet or Google Wallet in one tap. To check it, you scan its QR code with your own phone, with no hardware to buy.

Create my chess club card

Example: a club of 38 adults and 22 juniors

Imagine a chess club with 38 adult members and 22 juniors. Example fees: €40 and €15 a year, paid by transfer or at the club room. The secretary enters the sixty players in an evening and sends the cards. Sixty cards exceed the free plan’s 50, so the club uses Essential at €19 excl. VAT a month; if it only gave cards to its 38 adults, the free plan would do. Its two rapid tournaments a year, with around 60 entries each, are issued as tickets.

Tickets for your events too

The same app creates tickets for your events, for example “Rapid tournament” or “Simul”. You share a link, each guest gets a ticket with a QR code in their Wallet, and you scan at the door. MPass does not collect the ticket price: you take it as you always have. See event ticketing.

What it costs

Free up to 50 active cards or tickets, with no time limit. The Essential plan (€19 a month excluding VAT, up to 300 cards) adds renewal reminders and certificates. The Pro plan (€49 a month excluding VAT) adds Excel import. No commitment, and a 14-day trial of the paid plans with no credit card.

Frequently asked questions

Can the card show a player’s rating?

No. MPass has no connection with federations or rating lists, so nothing on the card follows a rating up or down. The card shows the name, a club member number, the plan and the validity. Ratings stay where they are published.

Does MPass do pairings or keep results?

No. Pairings, tie-breaks and results belong to your pairing software or your arbiter’s cards. What the ticket scan gives you before round one is the knowledge of who has arrived, which is what the pairings need.

Can players from other clubs enter our open tournament?

Yes. The ticket link can be shared publicly, and anyone who opens it can take an entry while tickets remain. The entry fee is paid to your club, by transfer or at the desk. Your own members can be given the link a few days earlier.

Does MPass collect membership fees?

No. You enter the amounts for information only. Your members pay the club as usual (bank transfer, in person) and you activate their card in MPass. No payment goes through the app.

Do we need to install an app?

No. You manage everything from your browser, and your members install nothing: the card goes straight into Apple Wallet (iPhone) or Google Wallet (Android), which are already on their phone.
