The library card for readers and families, in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet

Children lose library cards, parents forget them, and the desk ends up searching by surname while the queue grows behind the pushchairs. A library card stored in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet is always on the phone, shows the reader’s name and number, and is scanned at the desk in a moment.

A reader’s card that cannot fall out of a book bag

The card displays the name and colours of your library, the reader’s name, a reader number, the type of membership and the date it is valid until. Types and amounts are yours, for example Reader at €5 and Family at €10 a year. When the yearly fee is renewed, the new date appears on the phone on its own. At the desk, a librarian scans the QR code with a phone to confirm the card is current. Loans themselves stay in your library software, where the reader is looked up as usual.

Example plans and amounts from the “Library card” template: you change the names, the amounts and the validity period. MPass does not collect these amounts. On the back of the card you write your own text, for example: Media library · Game library · Reading workshops.

Three real situations

Saturday morning at the loans desk

A parent with three children and a pile of picture books shows one phone. The librarian checks that the family membership is valid, then records the loans in the library’s own system.

Borrowing games from the toy library

Toy libraries often ask for a membership before lending a boxed game. The card shows it is in order, and the volunteer on duty does not need access to the full member file to know that.

Story time in the children’s area

When story time is limited to fifteen children, share a ticket link with families. Parents arrive with a QR code, and nobody has to be turned away at the edge of the carpet.

How it works: 3 steps

Open the “Library & toy library” template

It is already set up for this activity: “Library card” as the title, example plans, colours. Add your logo and your own text in ten minutes.

Add your members

One by one, through a sign-up link each person fills in, or by Excel import on the Pro plan. Everyone receives their card by email or by link.

Scan with your phone

The card goes into Apple Wallet or Google Wallet in one tap. To check it, you scan its QR code with your own phone, with no hardware to buy.

Create my library card

Example: a village library with 190 readers

Picture a library and toy library run by two staff and six volunteers, with 130 individual readers and 30 families of two cards each, so 190 cards. New readers sign up at the desk; the librarian enters them, takes the €5 or €10 in cash as before, and the card arrives by email. The Essential plan at €19 excl. VAT per month covers up to 300 cards and reminds readers a month before their membership ends, instead of at the desk with books in hand.

Tickets for your events too

The same app creates tickets for your events, for example “Story time” or “Author talk”. You share a link, each guest gets a ticket with a QR code in their Wallet, and you scan at the door. MPass does not collect the ticket price: you take it as you always have. See event ticketing.

What it costs

Free up to 50 active cards or tickets, with no time limit. The Essential plan (€19 a month excluding VAT, up to 300 cards) adds renewal reminders and certificates. The Pro plan (€49 a month excluding VAT) adds Excel import. No commitment, and a 14-day trial of the paid plans with no credit card.

Frequently asked questions

Does MPass manage loans, returns and late books?

No. It is not a library management system: no catalogue, no loans, no reminders for overdue books. MPass replaces the plastic card and shows who is a member and until when. Your catalogue software continues to do the rest.

Can our barcode reader use the card?

The card carries a QR code meant to be scanned with a phone through MPass, which then shows whether the card is valid. It is not designed to feed a reader number into another program, so plan to look the reader up by name or number in your own software.

What about children and readers without a smartphone?

A parent can keep the child’s card in their own Wallet and show it at the desk. For readers with no smartphone, nothing stops you from keeping a paper card alongside: MPass does not oblige every member to go digital.

Does MPass collect membership fees?

No. You enter the amounts for information only. Your members pay the club as usual (bank transfer, in person) and you activate their card in MPass. No payment goes through the app.

Do we need to install an app?

No. You manage everything from your browser, and your members install nothing: the card goes straight into Apple Wallet (iPhone) or Google Wallet (Android), which are already on their phone.
