Local history society membership card in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet
A local history society lives on loyal members who pay once a year, come to four talks and expect the bulletin, while the secretary keeps the register by hand. A local history society membership card in the Wallet shows who is a member or a patron this year, and renewal reminders go out without a round of letters.

A sober card for members and patrons
The card shows the society’s name and emblem, the member’s name and number, the plan and the year of validity. Member and Patron member are example plans; the patron pays more and it shows on the card. You enter the members from your register or let them sign up through a link, and each receives the card by email. When a subscription is renewed, the card is extended on the phone. At a talk or a guided tour, the person at the door scans the QR code with a phone and sees whether the card is valid.
| Example plan | Example amount |
|---|---|
| Member | €20 |
| Patron member | €50 |
Example plans and amounts from the “Membership card” template: you change the names, the amounts and the validity period. MPass does not collect these amounts. On the back of the card you write your own text, for example: Local history · Visits · Talks.
Three real situations
A talk in the council chamber
Members come in free, visitors leave a few euros in the box. With sixty people arriving in ten minutes, the volunteer at the door looks at cards and scans only when the year is in doubt.
A guided tour of the town hall
The guide takes twenty-five people and no more. Places are reserved as tickets through a link, sent to members first if you wish, and scanned at the meeting point on the steps.
Sending out the yearly bulletin
The bulletin goes to members who have paid for the year. The members whose card is active are the mailing list, which saves a comparison between the bank statement and last year’s address labels.
How it works: 3 steps
Open the “Culture & heritage” template
It is already set up for this activity: “Membership card” as the title, example plans, colours. Add your logo and your own text in ten minutes.
Add your members
One by one, through a sign-up link each person fills in, or by Excel import on the Pro plan. Everyone receives their card by email or by link.
Scan with your phone
The card goes into Apple Wallet or Google Wallet in one tap. To check it, you scan its QR code with your own phone, with no hardware to buy.
Example: 130 members, a dozen of them patrons
Take a society with 118 ordinary members and 12 patron members. Example subscriptions: €20 and €50 a year, paid by bank transfer in January. The secretary types the list in from the register over two evenings, and adds the membership link to the society’s web page for newcomers. With 130 cards the society takes Essential at €19 excl. VAT a month: the automatic reminder a month before expiry replaces the January letters, and four talks and two tours a year are issued as tickets.
Tickets for your events too
The same app creates tickets for your events, for example “Local history talk” or “Guided tour”. You share a link, each guest gets a ticket with a QR code in their Wallet, and you scan at the door. MPass does not collect the ticket price: you take it as you always have. See event ticketing.
What it costs
Free up to 50 active cards or tickets, with no time limit. The Essential plan (€19 a month excluding VAT, up to 300 cards) adds renewal reminders and certificates. The Pro plan (€49 a month excluding VAT) adds Excel import. No commitment, and a 14-day trial of the paid plans with no credit card.
Frequently asked questions
Can a partner museum accept our card for free entry?
That depends on your agreement with the museum, not on MPass. What the card provides is a clear proof: the society’s name, the member’s name and a validity date, readable at any ticket desk. The museum does not need an account for that.
Our society has sixty members who all know each other. Do we need this?
Perhaps not. A register and a handshake work well at that size. The card starts to be useful when you have renewals to chase, tours with limited places, or benefits that someone outside the committee has to check.
Can talks be open to non-members too?
Yes. An event can be open to everyone through a link you publish, and visitors receive a ticket just as members do. What they pay, if anything, is paid to the society at the door. Members can simply show their card instead.
Does MPass collect membership fees?
No. You enter the amounts for information only. Your members pay the club as usual (bank transfer, in person) and you activate their card in MPass. No payment goes through the app.
Do we need to install an app?
No. You manage everything from your browser, and your members install nothing: the card goes straight into Apple Wallet (iPhone) or Google Wallet (Android), which are already on their phone.
